Art is an essential element in the lives of the people of Oaxaca, Mexico. Their art, whether wood carvings, ceramics, or other medium, is colorful and reflects their zest for life. In fact, art appears to be the essence of life to the Oaxacan. The Oaxacan artist’s use of color incredibly striking, drawinfg the viewers eye to the form and the details. Their use of color embraces neither realism nor complete abstract art, but instead fills pleasingly the eye and the world with color. Simple, everyday objects, be they loval animals, people, or things, are transformed into a utopian rainbow of color that normally exudes happiness and generates a like smile on the face of the beholder. The hand carved wood figures take folk surrealism to a magical and prominant place in art history and reflect the importance of art to Oaxacans for centuries. My favorite carvings are of the people and animals. The large, standing animals are very striking and add a grand touch of color and conversation to any room.
Though the striking and colorful wood carvings grab headlines, please peer closer at what Oaxacan art offers and let your eyes rest on their fine work in ceramics, clay, gold, silver, wood, and paper.
